The Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Fellowships enable outstanding scholars to conduct research on Europe and global order at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C.
During the academic year 2018-2019 the following fellowships will be awarded:
- 1 Academic Year Fellowship for a nine (9) month period from September 2018 to May 2019
- 2-3 Short Term Fellowships for an in-residence period of between 1 and 3 months
Fellows are closely integrated into the research, training, and outreach activities of the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Professor at the School. During the academic year 2018-2019 research and related activities will focus on Europe’s role in global order. Fellows will join a team of post-doctoral fellows who will focus on this subject during a regular series of high-level seminars, peer review sessions, and opportunities for direct engagement with senior foreign policy practitioners and leading scholars of statecraft and world order, including from the Henry A. Kissinger Center of Global Affairs at SAIS. Each Fellow is expected to complete a research paper during the period of residence according to the terms of the assignment entered into with the Foundation.
Eligibility
Applicants for Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Fellowships must have a doctorate or be at the post-doctorate level, have demonstrated research capacity, be fluent in English, and be eligible for a J-1 visa. Preference will be given to those who are no more than 6 years beyond completing their dissertation, although others are also eligible.
For the full academic year Fellowship, strong preference will be given to qualified and competitive candidates from Austrian institutions, although the Fellowship is open to candidates of other nationalities as well.
For the short-term Fellowships, preference will also be given to qualified and competitive candidates from Austrian institutions, but the Center encourages applications from candidates from other countries as well.
Stipend
Each Fellow will enter into a research assignment with the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation and will receive a monthly stipend of up to $5,000 for long term Fellowships and up to $3,000 for short term Fellowships; an office with computer; Internet access and voicemail; access to Johns Hopkins University libraries and other facilities. Each Fellow is expected to take care of his/her travel, accommodation, health care coverage and living expenses.
Application Procedure
Each applicant should submit the following (in English):
- A letter supporting the application.
- A 3-5 page double-spaced statement that proposes a research project, including its relevance to the theme Europe and Global Order.
- A curriculum vitae.
- Two sealed letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s professional competence.

The Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Fellows are selected by the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Professor at SAIS and the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation. Applicants will be notified by April 30, 2018.
The 2018-2019 academic year Fellowship begins either on September 1, 2018. Short-term Fellowships can begin anytime between September 1, 2018 and May 1, 2019.
